The characteristics of beeswax food packaging

At a time when the use of single-use plastic as food packaging is being banned, food manufacturers and wholesalers have developed many environmentally friendly alternatives. One of the most popular high-end disposable tableware alternatives is beeswax packaging. It seals food safely and ensures its quality until it is consumed. Characteristics, advantages and disadvantages - what is beeswax food packaging made of?

What is beeswax food packaging?

It is packaging made from :

Organic cotton

Tree resin

Jojoba oil

hemp, pre-coated with beeswax

As it is essentially composed of natural products, it is biodegradable and environmentally friendly. It is an excellent alternative to aluminium and disposable plastic. In fact, food packaging is now also available in various natural materials, such as bamboo or palm, to limit the environmental impact.

Beeswax packaging is also compostable. Once it can no longer be reused, its degradation will not harm the environment. In addition, this type of packaging can be washed and eventually recycled. It is available in different sizes to meet the needs of takeaway professionals. In any case, it can be used to package different types of food.

What are the advantages of beeswax food packaging?

This food packaging has many advantages:

An ideal container for storing food

It can be used to :

Covering cheese

Carrying fresh fruit and vegetables or sandwiches for a picnic

Storing fermented foods such as yoghurt

Freezing food

Packing leftovers...

A sustainable product

Beeswax food containers can be reused for a whole year if you take good care of them. To ensure this durability, they should be washed in cold soapy water. Be sure to use only alcohol-free soap and to wash them by hand only. Once clean, allow your food packaging to air dry without wringing or spinning it out first.

A container suitable for food contact

Reusable food packaging made from beeswax is perfectly suitable for food contact. It does not contain any toxic substances that could harm the health of consumers. Just as it is ideal for transporting food, it can also be used to store it.

It is a very malleable container that adapts to the shape of its contents. It can be folded to the desired size. However, it is advisable not to cut it, as this can damage it. Doing so will fray the edges and reduce its lifespan.

Recyclable packaging

Like cardboard or bamboo, beeswax packaging can be recycled through an industrial process. However, avoid packaging certain foods such as raw meat or pineapple. Instead, put them in a salad bowl before covering them with the packaging or use a stainless steel or glass container instead. Because the food container is washable, bacteria can remain unseen, so it is not the best solution for all meat and sausages.

What are the disadvantages?

Despite the advantages of beeswax food packaging, it also has some disadvantages:

They cannot be used in the microwave or oven.

They give off a slight wax odour that takes time to dissipate. However, experience shows that it does not transfer to the food.

They do not tolerate direct heat and should be kept away from flames.

They should not be left in the refrigerator indefinitely, as they may lose their performance. Similarly, it is best not to leave them soaking in water for too long.

Nevertheless, beeswax packaging is still a must in the food sector. It is increasingly being used to protect foodstuffs while preserving them in the best possible conditions.

Moreover, at the end of its life, each ingredient that makes it up returns to the earth, without leaving any trace. At this stage, your packaging will either be composted, pelleted or cut up. It can also be used as a fire starter. Beeswax combined with tree resin and organic cotton is therefore both a more environmentally friendly and healthier alternative for consumers.
